RFID IT Asset Tracking Security

RFID for Physical Security of IT Assets don't let data walk out the door

This past month the University of Florida notified 8,300 people that a laptop PC with their personal information was stolen.   That is a lot fewer than the 26.5 million names and social security numbers on a stolen Department of Veteran’s Affairs laptop in 2006, but probably not much comfort if your name was on either computer.   And it's not just laptops.  A lost data storage tape from the Bank of New York contained over 12.5 million names.

Losing IT Assets is Costly

One top 5 U.S. bank executive estimates that it costs the company over $2 million anytime an IT asset with consumer data is lost.  For the Department of Veteran's Affairs, you can add another $20 million in cost on top.  That is the amount they settled a class action suit for even though the FBI determined the privacy data was not breached before the laptop was recovered.
