Demand for Objective RFID Information: it’s growing

If anyone thought interest in RFID was waning, I have evidence to the contrary. This past week ODIN launched the inaugural RFID Tag Pricing GuideTM. Several hundred report downloads in the first three days suggest interest in objective RFID data is strong and growing.

ODIN has fielded requests for years to provide objective data on the performance of RFID tags, readers and solutions. Through customer projects and ODIN's RFID Benchmark SeriesTM we have set the record straight on RFID product performance through scientific testing. The ODIN engineers even went a little further by explaining what performance parameters matter most to end users.

The RFID Tag Pricing GuideTM complements the benchmarks by providing basic information on tag costs. This is critical. Tags are often the largest ongoing expense of an RFID system making accurate costs essential for financial planning and ROI analysis.

Like RFID equipment performance, tag cost has been misunderstood and the Pricing Guide provides useful, objective information available in a consolidated format for the first time. It also provides insight into why all tags are not created equal in cost or features. When is a five cent tag not a five cent tag? ODIN engineers answer this question and elaborate on the great variety of RFID tag features and the meaning for end users. Two other recent data points also point to strong market demand for RFID information. In March, ODIN launched a free RFID answer service call Ask the RFID Expert. For three months we have fielded a steady stream of questions on a wide variety of tough RFID problems that ODIN engineers answer within 24 hours. This inquiry stream has coincided with an increase of inbound call volume to ODIN asking questions regarding emerging RFID solutions and applications.

This is good news for the RFID market. The interest in objective information is indicative of interest in RFID adoption. However, adoption today is still impacted by a gap in objective information that is easy to access.

We hope that reports such as the RFID Tag Pricing GuideTM and services such as Ask the RFID Expert can continue to close that gap and help the industry information flow. End users need accurate, objective information founded in fact-based data and field experience. The demand is there. The education helps users make good choices and achieve success in their first implementation. Let us know what RFID topics you would like to learn more about. Maybe they will be the subject of a forthcoming report.
